What role can protein bars play in your nutrition?

Protein is king of the macronutrients, but getting enough each day can be hard, especially if you are busy. That’s where protein bars can help, with a quick protein punch on-the-go if your pressed for time, making you feel less hungry and therefor less likely to reach for sugary snacks that serve you very little purpose. However, not all protein bars are created equal, some shouldn’t even really be called protein bar to start with and are just riding the hype train. That’s why we created this ranking!

What to Look For

Protein per bar: it's important to look at the amount of protein per bar, and not the protein per 100g.

The protein source: what's the protein source of the bar? Important to have a clear idea of where that protein comes from.

Total calories: When you reach out for a protein bar, it shouldn't come with any extras that just add calories and unwanted stuff.

What to Avoid

Artificial Additives - Stay away from products containing unnecessary fillers, artificial colors, or preservatives.

"Low sugar" claims - usually those are packed with artificial sweeteners that can cause digestive issues, and are likely to just make you crave more food, defeating the point of a high protein snack.

1. ROAM Beef Bars

     PROS:

20g of protein and as little as 96kcal per 45g bar.

6 natural ingredients.

No preservatives (very rare for a meat snack).

Made with grass-fed beef or free range pork.

Good fibre source, makes you feel full after eating.

     CONS:

Savoury taste is not for everyone.

Almost exclusively sold online at the moment.

The Bottom Line:

Finally a savoury option without all the junk sweeteners, fillers and binders. Made with grass-fed beef and whey it’s got more protein per calorie than any of the competition with better bioavailability. Being made with Beef means you get protein as well as bioavailable zinc, B12, Iron, Carnitine, Creatine and Taurine.

It’s keto friendly, packs 20g of protein per bar and with a super long shelf life, and no refrigeration needed you can just buy in bulk and carry them anywhere with you.

They have a few flavours available that can please anyone, from a more natural beef flavour, to chilli and even a bit sweet flavours with apricot & hazelnut. They have also recently launched a free-range sweet & smokey pork bar. The best thing!? 6 all-natural ingredients, zero preservatives. Well done Roam.

2. Misfits

     PROS:

Vegan alternative.

Sweet taste and better than chocolates.

     CONS:

Lots of sweeteners and binders.

Lower quality protein source.

Overly sweet and makes you feel more hungry.

The Bottom Line:

Marked as a “Premium” protein bar, Misfits carry 26 ingredients and all the same old faces in terms of the sweeteners and binders, with an average 15g of protein in their 45g bar for 180kcals.

It's a nice vegan alternative for protein bars but that also means it's less bioavailable and not as good protein source for your body.

3. Grenade

     PROS:

Lots of flavour options.

Easy to buy on the go anywhere.

     CONS:

Sweeteners like malitol & sucralose.

27 ingredients!

High calorie.

The Bottom Line:

Marketed as low sugar but packed with 27 ingredients including artificial sweeteners like malitol and sucralose along with a bunch of bulking agents, thickeners and emulsifiers. 20g of protein with 211 kcal.

It's the brand you find in any store on-the-go, but feels like a dessert in disguise.

4. Kind Bar

     PROS:

Natural ingredients.

     CONS:

Low protein content.

High sugar.

The Bottom Line:

Marketed as a more natural option using nuts for the bulk of it’s protein content. 17 ingredients, 6g of sugar, 214 kcal and a measly 6g of actual protein in this 40g bar.

In our opinion, shouldn't even be a protein bar or an option for anyone wanting a quick snack.

2025’s Top Protein Bar

By far we were most impressed with ROAM Beef bars. Not only is the cleanest alternative of them all with the protein coming from grass-fed beef & whey protein, it has the highest protein-to-calorie ratio, making it just perfect.

It's keto friendly, packs 20g of protein per bar and with high shelf live, you can just buy in bulk and carry them anywhere with you.

They have a few flavours available that can please anyone, from a more natural beef flavour, to chilli and even a bit sweet flavours with apricot & hazelnut.

We would recommend you get their assorted value bundle to try all of them and find your favourite.
